I got acquainted with Wahoo’s Fish Tacos late last year after the Gypsy Picnic. We arrived too late for the food trucks, so my cousins and I went over a few blocks to South Congress instead.
Wahoo’s has two locations in Austin: South Congress and Rio Grande. The Rio Grande location is a bit larger and can accommodate a lot more people in the dining room. The South Congress location is smaller, but located in a great block with other businesses like Monkey See Monkey Do and Big Top Candy Shop.
The hosts/servers are always very friendly. You order at the register and they deliver your food to the table. Prices are cheap to moderate ($5-8 for a plate), and a decent selection of food. I’ve had the blackened fish tacos, shrimp tacos, and shrimp quesadilla. I recommend all three, especially the quesadilla.
Also at Wahoo’s locations you can pick up the highly coveted Cake Jar desserts. These tiny mason jars are full of the most delicious and moist cake you can find. The first time there I had the Red Velvet Cake. The flavors vary from week to week, as well as locations so you never know what flavor you might find. Check the Cake Jar web site for more locations and flavors.
